It is usually the hostfamily that picks you from an online website. (scary, I know) But ofcourse they will choose a student that is a good match with themselves. Therefore it is very important to write your application as honest as you can.
There are many, many Americans going to Germany each year. Germany is a cool country (The capital Berlin is awesome) so I think you did an excellent choice.
My advice is to become a member of the forum. Create a new thread for “Exchange Students going to Germany” and I’m sure you will meet a lot of people that are in the same situation as you.
This is not easy. But I can give you some tricks that might do the job.
1. Don’t nag! It is a thin line between nagging and asking gently - but try to be on the right side.
2. Try to let them understand why you want to go. Noo, it is not because you want to drink beer in Europe!
3. Order many brochures from different Exchange student programs. The brochures are made by experts to convince you and your parents that an student exchange year is an amazing thing.
4. If they think it is too expensive - make a list how much you cost having at home for a year. (IT IS EXPENSIVE!
)
5. Make this website as a start page on the family computer so they know you are serious about going.
This is a good start.
If you need more tips don’t hesitate to ask again. Good luck convincing your parents!
