Are you interested in a year as an exchange student?

Why should you leave the comfort of home, all your friends and a great school to study abroad for a year? Because it’s a fantastic, fun and good experience! Learning a new language and culture will really use your high school time to its best advantage.

German Exchange Student

A good exchangesstudent?
There is not one sort of person who is more suitable than another. Of course it’s easier if you are happy, outgoing, open minded and find it easy to adjust to new situations. But, to be an exchange student is not about who you are right now, it’s about who you will become. You may be shy in your home country, but when you go to another place you will grow as a person and take huge steps in your personal development.

Awareness
An exchange year is not all fun and games! Without meaning to scare you, you must be aware that the year will not go as you thought. Overly high expectations, combined with a bad beginning with your host parents or school, could be a catastrophic combination! You will not go to a problem free family, community or school! You should be open with your representative and tell him or her if you are having problems. If you don’t, they can’t help you. But also remember, there is no perfect family, school or town. It’s up to you to make the best of what you have! Everyone will not get “the year of their life”, or may not think so the time. But every year has potential ... including yours!

Hi Ami,
First of all I would advice you to read alot of stuff about an exchange student year. Go Exchange Mania. smile

Then when you really know that you are ready to go as an exchange student you should contact an exchange program in your country. Talk with them about costs and what you need to do. There is usually a small interview you have to do with a program representative. Nothing to worry about, just a check that you are motivated.

After the interview and you have been accepted - GO EXCHANGE MANIA. smile Create a blog, make friends from all around the world.

Now you are READY to become an Exchange Student! smile

6 Hanne Anderson on Jan 7th, 2010 said:

Monica, talk to the organization you want to go with!:) I don’t know where you live -but here in Sweden you need to have the grade we call G (approved) in all your subjects.
And Em. Talk to an organization. But I can’t see that it would be a problem you’ve been home-schooled. I don’t know where you live, but if you search “exchangestudent” at Google or something like that, they almost always show some organizations in your country smile
Hope this helped a bit to both of you (:

I want to spend my senior year in Vietnam (currently a junior) but I already have a grandmother that I would stay with. I’m only part Vietnamese part white American so I don’t speak the language, I only know basics, maybe. Is it possible to stay with my grandmother? I really want to experience Vietnam because even if I’m half it’s just as much of an unknown country to me as it would be to every other American teenager.

13 Hanne Anderson on Jan 31st, 2010 said:

Isabelle, I’m not sure how it is in Australia, but In Sweden you can’t go until you’re 15 (maybe 14 with some organizations) But the first I would recommend you to do is: order a brochure from an organization in Australia (The ones I’m sure/pretty sure are in Australia is Rotary, YFU and AFS). Let your parents see it (lay it on the table or something like that) Then they’ll probably gonna ask you about it smile
Good luck!

23 Rinni on Apr 14th, 2010 said:

I’ve tried Rotary~ they said that the rotary club in my area “isn’t active in the program”~ I’m not entirely sure as to what that means exactly, but I suppose I should find out. ^^;

31 Emily Styles on Jun 14th, 2010 said:

Hello,
I hosted an exchange student this year and I have a couple questions;
is it easier to go to the country where i’ve been studying the language?
would it be awful to go somewhere you can’t speak the language?
And i take horseback-riding (dressage/english for you horse people) really seriously, can i still do this with exchange?
thanks smile

32 Hanne Anderson on Jun 15th, 2010 said:

Emily, Yes, it’s easier to go to a country where you know the language. But the organizations says that after 3 months you speak the language very well even if you don’t know a word of it when you get there. And about the dressage -I’m pretty sure of that! Just write it in you host family letter. I don’t know how it is in the rest of the world but here in Sweden (or maybe it’s just my city?....) it’s pretty common!
Good luck smile

Hello I am curious about hosting exchange students mostly.
On the student side of it.

For those preparing to become a Exchange student
What are your thoughts of chores around the house to help your host family for providing you a place and food.
And also what type of things do you expect from your host family?

for those that already have.
What did your host families require of you?
and did you feel it was easy with the host family?

I know these are weird questions
also have any of the host families paid the exchange student for doing extra chores?
somewhat like a job. as I know some of the organizations frown upon that.

Also remember to keep your grades up and never let things get in way of your education

Hello, my name is Emily and i am 15 years old. I would really like to study abroad. I don’t have any strong preferences other than a culture enriched setting and maybe a different language spoken…?
I’ve googled the topic and gone onto yahoo answers, it seems i can’t find a legitimate website. I’d really like some straight forward answers, websites, programs; i live in California…so if anyone has any information i would greatly appreciate it.
