Programfee and expenses

To be an exchanges student cost money. First you have to pay a bill to the organization and then you probably need a lot more pocket money then you are use too. There are always a lot of expenses that you are not use too. How you and your parents deal with the budget is of course up to you. A normal organization fee is around 9 -10000$. For that you will get insurance, flight, visa and they will fix a place to live and a school to attend. Some organization helps with interest loans up to 24 months for the whole fee. There is also a lot of scholarships, so out advice is to look if there are any that community gives out.

When you have arrived to your country you have to be aware that it will cost a lot of money. Your host parents will be responsible for the greatest expenses like food and living. In addition to that you will pay for clothes, school lunch and activities with your friends. You also might want to discover other part of the country and then there are great journeys witch is organized of your organization. A 14 day journey with an organization in the US is around 1000 – 1500$.

Credit card for international students

Easiest way to handle you money is to get a credit card that is working abroad. (Visa, Mastercard) Also get a internet account if possible so your parents easy can send money to you when needed.

i am currently not attending a high school; i am homeschooled and i am wondering is there anyway you can be homeschooled in other countries? Or does being an exchange student mean you haft to attend a school in the country you are living in?

Does your school help pay for some of the cost?

Hi Sam,
In Sweden we don’t get any help from School. :(
There are usually some scholerships you can apply for through each organization. Where are you from Sam?

Austin: I think you need to attend school. But why not take the opportunity not to be homeschooled for a year? I have only heard about homeschooling in the US. In Sweden we don’t have it.

For other visitors: Do you have homeschooling in your country?

I am from The U.S.

I dont know why you would want to be homeschooled in another country the whole point is to experiance another culture and make new friends. That is pretty hard to do when ur at home all day. Take some chances.

Hi,
for all of you who want to be an exchange student, but are not sure if they want to go to school or continue their home-schooling abroad, I can highly recommend www.bestexchangestudent.com.
We found families there all over the world who want to exchange with us and membership is free. How cool is that?!
cheers
Andrea & family

After spending some time in Thailand, we would love to host a student from there. We are wondering if there are any ways of hosting an underpriveliged student that is excelling in school. i.e. we pay the expenses for them. Anyone know of a way to go about this?

Hi! I’m a girl who wants to study abroad as an exchange student. Could anybody tell me how much money it is going to take? If the “packet price” is about 8000euros or dollars, how much it will rise from other things? About 2-3000? I wonder how much money other exchange students has spent during the year.. Could someone more wise tell me his/hers experiences and also about the land where he/she stayed?

Hi, when my year is over I will have spent about 3500 dollars in spending money. Am on an exchange program now in the U.S

14 Helena on Apr 3rd, 2010 said:

Oh…that’s quite a lot : D but that doesn’t sound so much when you think you have to pay everything extra on your own : d and thank you for answering my question :D do you have some hobbies there that you have to pay?
i’m planning to go australia : D i’m so excited about it already and i have to say that i can’t wait anymore :-D perhaps i’m going to spent that much money during that year..hopefully not more : )

15 Jonatan on Apr 5th, 2010 said:

Well it all depends on how much you yourself want and can spend but it is going to be a little bit because the school lunches, extracurricular activities etc. No I just played football and didn’t have to pay more than a couple of visits at the hospital for that, unfortunately.
Sound awesome, I hope you’ll like it and enjoy the year!

To the people asking about an ‘agency’ to go through, there are a few choices. One that most oten can apply is through the closest Rotary Club. Look them up online and shoot them an email smile Thats how I got started. There is a lengthy process to get accepted, but as long as your foriegn exchange material it wont be a big deal smile

Hi
I am currently studying in the USA and am interested in a exchange program in Japan. I need some advice on cheap exchange programs where the deadlines haven’t already passed.

18 Belinda on May 4th, 2010 said:

WHOA!! $10K to be an exchange student for what?? That’s ridiculously expensive isnt it? Yes it includes flight, visa and insurance but that in itself cant be more then $3. Talking about the company making one heck of a huge profit and ripping off families. Not to mention when room and board is FREE….pathetic.

19 Braxie on May 4th, 2010 said:

I agree with you Belinda. My family hosted a foreign exchange student from Germany. She paid 9,000 and that didnt include airfare. She was a nightmare anyway and my mom and dad had her removed after 3 months. Needless to say we will never host again.

20 Katarina on May 11th, 2010 said:

Braxie- I am an exchange student in America, and I think it’s too bad that your family will never host again because of that one exchangestudent. All of us aren’t bad, and I seriously believe that by hosting you could make a teenagers year abroad even better, and in the end it will be beneficial for you too! You were just really unlucky with hosting a “bad” student. You have to remember that all personalities won’t always click, and we’re all different. I am sure that if you and your family ever decide to host again it will be a totally different experience, and maybe it will create an international friendship for a lifetime!

We’re thinking of hosting an exchange student and are going through an agency called PeopleLink.  Would appreciate any feedback on them either from a student or a host family.  Thanks.

i am dying to become an exchange student in England… is the country really as great as i think it is or should i call off my hopes?

23 David on Aug 20th, 2010 said:

wow 9-10k to pay the organization?
that is alot of money.

has anyone ever looked into finding your own host?
and looked into getting a student visa.

I think I would prefer host for the family rather then a organization.
especially if organization is making that much money

HI evryone I’m cynthia and I’m from the U.S I really want to study abroad but my family doesn’t have the money to send me. I feel like this would be an oppertunity of a lifetime and it’s always been my dream to travel. Is there any way I won’t have to pay so much money?

25 David on Aug 24th, 2010 said:

if your from the states its alot cheaper.
estimate 2k for flight(to be safe).
Find someone you trust where you can stay in that country.
get passport & check on which visa you need. etc.

school generally in other countries is tons cheaper.
places like philippines if your living with someone 5bucks a day would suffice.
biggest issue in places like philippines you pay 100 a month then they would be happy super happy.
some would be super happy at 50 a month.
education is not as good in philippines but you would be older then any of them if your still in HS

a person could survive on 1-300 a month in philippines.
transpo is cheap also

how much would it be for 1 whole school year?...

27 ryan22 on Sep 3rd, 2010 said:

Forrr the U.S to France how much you think? iv’e seen flights for only 450$ and housing is free, leaves only insurance and a little spending which i rarely do. and what if we dont know the family? is there a program where u get to meet them before you fly over and make sure they are like… sane? hah

28 David on Sep 4th, 2010 said:

from what I gather nobody generally gets to meet them first.
Thats why I feel its better that students & hosts should get to know each other first & know if there will be a compatibility problem.

Are they strict rude what do they expect from you.
etc.
The programs are good but They are suppose to be non profit & they earn more then everything costs.
Imagine. If your Paying 10k 1k flight 1k insurance etc.
it dont add up. If that money was given to the host instead & for the student to help budget & manage things to help out.
Non Profit = Not earning.
But they earn atleast 5k
